Ngā Mātāpono / Our Values

The values that inform both our vision and mission, as well as how we go about bringing them into effect, include:

  • Kotahitanga: unity of purpose among and between iwi, hapu, and whanau, and an agreed direction towards a shared vision;
  • Kaitiakitanga: guardianship of our resources and taonga;
  • Manaakitanga: caring for the mana and well-being of all iwi members;
  • Whanaungatanga: developing and strengthening the bonds that link us together;
  • Whakapapa: a framework that connects each other to generations past and future;
  • Rangatiratanga: expression of the attributes of a rangatira-humility, leadership by example, generosity, diplomacy and professionalism; the ability to create and control our destiny; and do what we do with integrity and self-determination.
  • Te Reo me nga Tikanga: recognising and promoting that the language is the repository of all that we are as Maori. Our language and cultural practices are how we express our unique Ngati Apa ki te Ra To cultural identity and world view. We must halt the decline and develop cultural practitioners; and
  • Whenua/Mana whenua: recognising our ancestral relationship with the whenua and environs. “Toitu te whenua, whatu ngarongaro he tangata”.
