OBJECTIVE 5 - Strengthening understanding of Whakapapa

This objective is about undertaking further and on-going research into whakapapa, to provide a credible and widely accepted whakapapa foundation for Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō.

Why is this important?

Rāranga maunga, tū tonu, tū tonu

You have gone but your mountain is everlasting

As the framework that connects us from the past, and to the future, whakapapa is a critical base for Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō for people to understand where they come from and how they link to each other.

Practically, as pressure for registration of membership is likely to grow, it is important to have a credible and widely accepted whakapapa available for validation purposes.

How will we do this?

We intend to create a new role to lead whakapapa research. This will involve consolidating the work done to date and the whakapapa we already have, and building on this by filling in gaps we know about, and identifying any deficiencies that we may be unaware of.

How can you tell if we have been effective?

Within a year:

  • We will have brought on board somebody with the skills and expertise to research and build a credible and accepted account of Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō whakapapa; and
  • Have given you the opportunity to engage more directly with your whakapapa.

Within five years we will have:

  • Developed a detailed, credible, and widely accepted account of Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō whakapapa; and
  • Made the whakapapa readily accessible and well-known to whānau.
