Culture / Ahurea

Our language, customs and our culture are at the core of who we are as Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō. Woven together, these things make up our Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tōtanga. Our language and culture define who we are and how we express our unique cultural identity. Our cultural values help to guide us into the future.

Like most other iwi, colonisation had a devastating effect on our cultural identity. As a post-settlement iwi, Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō is investing significant time, energy and resources into strengthening our cultural identity and in providing our whānau with opportunities to experience and develop their understanding of Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tōtanga.

Language and cultural revitalisation experts believe that it only takes one generation to lose a language but three to regenerate it.

Crucial to our language and culture revitalisation is our cultural and language strategy, Te Ohonga Ake. Supporting the work of the post-settlement Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō Charitable Trust is Te Puna Ahurea.  There is also a growing pool of tutors dedicated to the regeneration of Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tōtanga.
