Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tōtanga
Our winter archives work has unearthed a variety of treasures, from early land records, to waiata and copies of photographs, such as this picture of the Mahuika / Bannister whānau, likely to have been taken at Makaawhio around 1903 or 1904.
Now, with the arrival of spring, the Archive project also moves into a new season of discovery. The first batch of audio cassette tapes are awaiting their farewell karakia before being boxed up and sent off to Wellington to be digitised. It will be so exciting to soon share these voices with a wider audience!
As well as turning our audio cassettes into digital files, preparations are being made to digitally scan the documents and photographs currently held in the Archives. Specialists from Te Papa will visit us on site to advise on some of the technical aspects, before we launch into that new phase of work this coming summer.
