GM Corner

GM Corner Guy Royal, Acting CEO

Christmas is only around the corner and as such planning for hapu Christmas parties is in full swing.  Puaha Te Rangi Hapū will be held in Westport on Saturday 2 December 2017. Please contact Kylie Batt 022 029 0393 to confirm your attendance. Tarakaipa Hapū will be held in at Stadium on Sunday, 17th December (rescheduled due to Pa wars). Please contact Margaret Bond 027 229 4035 to confirm your attendance. These parties promise to be a great day out so make sure you head along if you can.

As we draw to the end of another year it is timely to reflect on what we have achieved and think about what we as an Iwi need to focus on going forward.

In the wake of the recent General Election, national politics looks to be in good shape for supporting Iwi regional development aspirations. It’s great to see that there are a number of Māori ministers and MP’s in the Coalition Government. Over the next few months we are hoping to meet with various Ministers to promote Ngāti Apā ki te Rā Tō and Te Tauihu / Top of the South, particularly in the areas of regional development. We will be sure to update you on the outcome of these meetings.

Also just around the corner are the National Reo Awards of which Mana Rangatahi are nominees. It is great to see our cultural programmes gaining traction and being nominated for the awards. Our programmes and activities are nation-leading and the awards are recognition of this. Well done to our team led by Kiley Nepia for a win!. Congratulations also to Margaret Bond recognised as a Living Treasure for her weaving.

Finally I’d like to let you know that Ngāti Apa has made an application under the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011 to secure traditional rights to water space in our rohe on behalf of the Iwi as a collective. You can see a summary of the application here.

It is too early to determine whether our application will be successful as the Court and the Minister is yet to signal what the requirements will be to claim rights under the Act. If you have any questions, want to understand the claim or anything else please give me a call.

Guy Royal, Acting GM, Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō Trust
