Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tōtanga
This month the Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō Archive work has focused on starting the preservation of our audio and visual taonga.
We have a small but special collection of VHS video and audio cassette tapes, mostly dating back to the 1990’s, that will be transferred to a new digital format, creating a ‘Preservation Master Copy.'
In addition to the preservation master-copy, which will be kept safely stored in the Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō archives, we’ll also make a copy of each video recording, allowing us to view, stream, edit and share the digital images, as appropriate. It is expected the digitisation work on the first set of video tapes will begin before Christmas.
PLEASE HELP: A number of the audio cassettes refer to other tapes that would have been recorded as part of a series, but these are not in our Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō archive collection. We are keen to hear from you if you have audio-cassettes of whānau members talking about their whakapapa, whānau or iwi history that you would be happy to share with us.
With the archive project now well underway, we want to grow our collection of Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō audio and visual taonga, and at the same time preserve our iwi history by transferring the knowledge from old tapes on to a new digital format.
If you have any cassette or VHS tapes that should be protected and preserved in our iwi’s collection for the generations to come it would be great to hear from you. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or Freephone 0800 578900.
