Mangatāwhai Pakihi
Scholarship

The Mangatāwhai Pakihi Scholarship was created in 2021 to provide a pathway for iwi members to be a part of our commercial future. This scholarship will incorporate employment opportunities, pathways, internships and mentoring.

Mangatāwhai is a point of convergence that links many of the trails used by our people. It represents where whānau would gather to trade in taonga such as Pounamu, Pākohe and Parāoa (Whalebone). ‘Manga’ means ‘branches’ and ‘Tāwhai’ is to travel. Mangatāwhai symbolises ‘to travel the branches’ that signify the various trade routes from the Wairau and westward down into the Kawatiri. The entrepreneurial skills and tikanga of our tīpuna are woven into the commercial framework of our iwi.

Scholarship recipients will receive $5,000 per year towards course fees and $1,000 towards course materials and/or travel per annum for the duration of the course, for up to three years (subject to annual satisfactory completion and submission of results).

One scholarship is available annually, with up to three scholars being funded at any one time.

The successful applicant may have the opportunity to undertake work or an internship (in a paid capacity) for the iwi during course holidays (though no guarantee of work is provided by the Trust)
