Chevelle Ataera is one of 23 Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō members awarded an Education Grant for the 2021 academic year.
Tēnā koutou e te whānau,
My name is Chevelle Ataera. I am the eldest daughter of Dianna Ataera and Selwyn Tutaki. My grandparents are Reboama and Margery Ataera (nee MacDonald).
I was born and raised in the Hawke’s Bay but have now made Wellington home with my partner Chad and our tamariki, Matariki and Te Whaiao. After a long and successful career in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, I decided to retire and follow my passion for psychology.
I went on to complete a Graduate Diploma in Science in 2019 at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington, and I am now studying towards a Master of Science (Cross-Cultural Psychology).
My research this year is focused on exploring the experiences of wāhine Māori with endometriosis. If this sounds like something you could be interested in, please feel free to get in touch with me.
I am extremely grateful to have the support of Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō this year and look forward to sharing my academic journey with you all.
Ngā mihi nui,
Chevelle
