South Island Customary Fishing Regulations
Several whānau members from Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō have been appointed and trained as tangata tiaki to operate under the provisions of the South Island Customary Fisheries Regulations to ensure the safe and correct management of our customary fisheries.
Tangata tiaki for Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō are:

How to work within the regulations?
Prior to going customary fishing under the regulations, you must get an authorisation from your local tangata tiaki. You must obtain the authorisation in person. Some other key things to remember with your authorisation are:
- The permit must be kept in your possession at all times,
- You must catch only those species specified on the authorisation,
- Your catch is not to exceed the quantity specified,
- It is only valid for the date and area specified,
- You must report your catch back to the tangata tiaki within five days of fishing.
